North Carolina State Wolfpack vs. Maryland Terrapins
Tip-off: Wednesday, January 16, 2013 – 7:00 PM ET
Comcast Center, College Park, MD
North Carolina State Wolfpack coach Mark Gottfried and many YouWager fans consider that this college basketball team has the right amount of experience to help them avoid a letdown following their biggest victory of the season.
The Wolfpack already know how to work the Maryland Terrapins top perimeter threat.
Tonight the No. 14 North Carolina can match their longest victory streak in 24 years when they travel to face Dez Wells and Maryland.
The Wolfpack (14-2, 3-0 ACC) won 84-76 over then-No. 1 Duke Blue Devils on Saturday to hand them their first defeat. C.J. Leslie scored 25 points for North Carolina, who took advantage of an overexcited home crowd that stormed the court after the victory. This college basketball team will now go on the road to try to match the 11-game win streak of the 1988-89 team after the emotional win.
The Wolfpack ended a nine-game losing streak to the Terrapins (13-3, 1-2) with a 79-74 win last season, as Leslie had 20 points and 11 rebounds and Scott Wood added 19 points.
Maryland’s top two scorers from that team are gone, but they have added Wells — a Xavier transfer and Raleigh native who was a high school teammate of Leslie. The 6-foot-5 Wells, averaging 12.2 points, nearly joined N.C. State — who are very familiar with him.
Despite the team not having the talented Wells, the Wolfpack lead the nation in field-goal percentage at 52.8. Five players average double figures in points, and freshman forward T.J. Warren is among the nation’s leaders with his 67.2 shooting percentage.
The Terrapins could very well turn into a challenge since it leads the ACC in defensive field-goal percentage at 35.3. Maryland enjoyed a 13-game win streak since a season-opening 72-69 defeat to then-No. 3 Kentucky Wildcats, but they’ve dropped their last two.
The Wolfpack have lost their last four visits to College Park since an 85-69 victory Jan. 23, 2005.
