New York Yankees vs. Texas Rangers
Tip-off: Monday, July 22, 2013 – 7:00 PM ET
Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, Arlington, Texas
- New York: Nova (4-2, 3.63 ERA)
- Texas: Darvish (8-4, 3.02 ERA)
The Texas Rangers have had to endure a struggling rotation lately and this has definitely had an impact on the team. However, tonight the Rangers might catch a break in their series versus the New York Yankees.
Yu Darvish is the first of two Texas’ pitchers set to return from injuries, and he’ll make his first start in a little more than two weeks this evening’s series opener.
Rangers’ (54-44) starters have combined for a 7.21 ERA during a 1-7 stretch and gave up four runs in the first four innings in their fourth consecutive loss Sunday, 4-2 against the Baltimore Orioles. That defeat dropped the club three games behind AL West-leading Oakland Raiders.
YouWager experts believe Texas might be able to put an end to their difficulties when they get Darvish (8-4, 3.02 ERA) and Alexi Ogando off the disabled list the next two MLB games.
The 26 year-old Darvish is coming back right on time as he’s 1-0 with a 1.98 ERA in two career starts versus New York (52-46). Darvish did not get a decision in his only matchup this baseball season, giving up three runs over 5 1/3 innings in a 4-3 defeat June 25.
Even so the Japan native is also 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA in his last four starts, and he surrendered five runs over six-plus innings in a 9-5 defeat versus the Houston Astros on July 6 before his first career trip to the DL for a strained back.
Darvish will meet an injury-plagued Bronx Bombers team that’s lost seven of 11 and got some bad news on Alex Rodriguez on Sunday.
The 37 year-old shortstop was to return from the disabled list (hip surgery) on Tuesday but suffered a strained left quad while rehabbing. Rodriguez is likely to return to the Yankees’ spring training facility in Tampa, Fla., for rest and treatment.
The Yanks followed that announcement by blowing an early three-run lead versus the Boston Red Sox en route to an 8-7 defeat in 11 innings.
The Yankees will be sending Ivan Nova (4-2, 3.63) to the mound who will try to help break his club out and end their woes with a third win in as many starts. According to the MLB stats the righty has a 2.28 ERA and 24 strikeouts over 23 2/3 innings in his three starts since returning from a stint in the minors.
