Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore, Maryland
Oakland: Straily (6-7, 4.22 ERA)
Baltimore: Norris (9-10, 3.93 ERA)
The Baltimore Orioles managed to outplay the Oakland Athletics while taking three of four away from home four months ago.
Tonight the Orioles could impress YouWager experts with another dominant performance versus theAthletics which would take the O’s into the driver’s seat for a wild-card spot.
Baltimore (71-55) is three games behind the Oakland (71-55) for the second wild-card spot, but neither has done a great job lately. The O’s have lost six of nine while its bullpen continues to have difficulties, while Oakland seek better situational hitting after dropping five of nine.
The O’s were able to avoid a sweep with a 4-2 home win versus the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday as Chris Davis hit his major league-leading 46th home run. Manager Buck Showalter chose not to use closer Jim Johnson after he had squandered three straight save chances and allowed three hits in a non-save situation in Tuesday’s defeat. Instead, Tommy Hunter recorded his fourth save.
Davis follows Frank Robinson (49) and Brady Anderson (50) for the most homers by a Baltimore player in a baseball season. His next at home will be his 26th, a Camden Yards record
The Athletics have batted .131 with runners in scoring position in its last nine games, including one extra-base hit and 15 strikeouts. Oakland was 1 for 9 in such situations in a 5-3 home defeat versus the to Seattle Mariners on Wednesday, with two runs coming on solo homers from Coco Crisp and Brandon Moss.
Both scheduled starters have had difficulties in limited action versus each other’s teams. Baltimore’s Bud Norris (9-10, 3.93 ERA) has gone 3-1 with a 3.91 ERA in five games — four starts — since being acquired from the Houston Astros, but went 0-2 with a 7.82 ERA in three starts versus the Athletics with Houston this baseball season.
Oakland will counter with Dan Straily (6-7, 4.22) who gave up four runs over 4 2/3 innings of a 9-5 defeat versus the Baltimore Orioles on Sept. 16. The right-hander is 0-5 over his last six starts even with a 4.09 ERA, receiving a total of three runs of support.
