After free-agent second baseman Robinson Cano made it to Seattle yesterday to meet with the Mariners about an offer that YouWager bettors believe could approach $250 million, he is still not prepared to make a decision today.
Jay Z, who is Cano’s agent, was in the Seattle area, flying there from Los Angeles earlier. The artist has a concert Friday night in Anaheim, Calif.
Several sources reported the talks have broken down after Jay Z demanded 10 years and $252 million.
In the mean time, the New York Yankees are growing increasingly resigned to the likelihood of a future without the 31 year-old star. Another source has confirmed Cano has told teammates he doesn’t plan on giving the Yanks a hometown discount.
The New York team has stated that they believe the Mariners are about to offer Cano a nine-year, $225 million contract — well below Cano’s reported demand of $310 million over 10 years but a lot higher than New York’s offer in the range of $175 million over seven years.
It has also been said that the Dominican Republic native went to Seattle thinking that the Mariners would raise their offer. However, the team believed Cano flew to Seattle to finalize a deal.
