Last night Wisconsin Badgers coach Kelly Sheffield couldn’t be happier with his team after being the lowest-seeded team in NCAA volleyball history to reach the championship match.
YouWager experts believed this games was actually going to be a speed bump for top-seeded Texas Longhorns on its way to the title game but became a victorious moment for the 12th-seeded Wisconsin when they upset the defending national champion Texas 3-1.
The Badgers (28-9) took control early and held off Texas 25-19, 25-18, 26-28, 25-23.
Wisconsin will play No. 2 Penn State Nittany Lions in the championship match Saturday night.
The Nittany Lions State beat No. 3 Washington Huskies 3-0 in the second semifinal. Penn State swept Wisconsin this season, beating them 3-0 in each of the two matches.
The previous lowest seed to reach the championship game were the Stanford Cardinal at No. 11 in 2004.
The Badgers are the fifth team seeded 12th or lower to reach the national semifinals but the first to earn a spot in the title match. Wisconsin also made it to the title match in 2000, losing versus the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
