Golden Globe Awards 2019, Best Actress and Actor in Motion Picture – Drama
We are continuing out coverage of the 76th annual Golden Globe Awards, which are set for this coming Sunday, January 6, by looking at the acting categories. We tried to help out with the movie awards yesterday, but now we need to start thinking about the stars who drove those nominated movies to great heights. Let’s start off in the drama category, where we will look at both the male and female awards.
Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama
There are 5 women nominated for their outstanding work in dramatic films this past year, and they are as follows:
Lady Gaga – A Star is Born (-500): While the singer/actress does not have the acting resume of some of the other women in this category, she does have a win under her belt already, with that one coming for her turn in American Horror Story. The Hollywood Foreign Press always seem to love global stars, so Gaga could well prove to be a good bet.
Glenn Close – The Wife (+250): Close is certainly no stranger to the awards circuit, as this is her 15th nomination at the Golden Globes. That she has won just twice in the past should tell you that she is not necessarily a shoo-in to win this one, although she is considered to be one of the top two favorites by critics and industry insiders.
Nicole Kidman – Destroyer (+1000): Kidman is another actress who has received a lot of love at the Golden Globes, winning 5 times from 13 nominations. Her role in Destroyer is one of her grittier performances to date, so do not count her out entirely.
Melissa McCarthy – Can You Ever Forgive Me? (+1200): This is only the second time that Miss McCarthy has been nominated at the Globes, but it is her first time in the drama category. That may work against her here.
Rosamund Pike – A Private War (+1400): This is the second nomination for Rosamund Pike in this category, with her previous nomination coming in 2015 for Gone Girl. She is an underdog this time around.
Our Prediction: Lady Gaga
Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama
The 5 men nominated in the drama actor category are as follows:
Bradley Cooper – A Star is Born (-400): The general consensus is that A Star is Born could well be the big winner at the Golden Globes this year, which could work against Cooper, as the Foreign Press may skip him here given that he might win as director of the movie.
Rami Malek – Bohemian Rhapsody (+250): While the movie had its fair share of critics in regards the story and final product, the only person who came away totally unscathed was Malek, whose portrayal of Freddie Mercury was widely viewed as being spot on.
Willem Dafoe – At Eternity’s Gate (+1000): While Dafoe has been around for a long time and is highly regarded as an actor, this is just his third nomination. He has yet to win, so might this end up being his year?
Lucas Hedges – Boy Erased (+1500): Lucas Hedges is a young actor that has drawn a lot of critical acclaim for his work, and who is now getting rewarded with his first Golden Globe nomination. He is in with a tough group here, so I would be surprised to see him win.
John David Washington – BlacKkKlansman (+1800): This is the first nomination for Mr. Washington, who delivered a stellar performance as a detective infiltrating the Ku Klux Klan. A bit of an underdog pick here.
Our Prediction: Rami Malek
