There is a lot of college basketball still to be played before we get to the excitement of March Madness, but it’s always fun to look ahead and try to predict what might happen over the next couple of months. It’s not a very good season to be in the predictions game, as it has been one of the most unpredictable on record. That certainly makes things a great deal more exciting for the impartial observer, but for those of us trying to get a clear image from the old crystal ball, it can be a bit rough. Still, college basketball betting predictions are exactly what we do here, so let’s make a few, some of which may be on the bold side before we get to all the madness in March.

Who will finish the season at #1?

The obvious choice here would be Villanova, but this particular article is not about making those obvious choices. Given the way in which the teams at the top have been losing games this season, it’s essentially nothing more than a guessing game when choosing who will land at #1. The team I am looking at right now are the Purdue Boilermakers. They are 16-2 overall, but perhaps more importantly, have gone 5-0 in Big 10 play. They are winners of 12 straight games and have a pair of wins over ranked opponents. If you are looking for a sexier pick than Purdue, then I would also take a good long look at the streaking West Virginia Mountaineers.

Who is a good dark horse pick this season?

Purdue would certainly fall nicely into the dark horse category, but since I went with them to finish #1, let’s look a little lower down the current rankings. The Arizona State Sun Devils started the season with a bang and even managed a big signature win over the Kansas Jayhawks, who were ranked #2 at that time. The Sun Devils are #11 right now but will tumble next week after losing 3 of their last 4. I don’t see this as a sign that this team is about to collapse, and while I don’t think they have a shot at winning it all, I do believe that they are good enough to make some noise in the tournament.

Who will win player of the year?

Prior to the start of the season, all the buzz in this category was heaped on Grayson Allen of Duke, and while he is having a solid season, there are a number of players overshadowing him right now. Perhaps the biggest surprise of all is the emergence of freshman guard Trae Young of Oklahoma, who is putting up some absolutely ridiculous numbers. With 29.2 PPG, he is almost 4 PPG ahead of his closest rival. He also leads the nation with 10.1 assists per game and has a shooting percentage of .449, not to mention being 85% from the free throw line. Unless this young man has a total collapse or an injury coming down the stretch, he will be the college basketball player of the year.

Which team will win it all?

If you are looking to get the very best odds on a national championship winner in college basketball, now might well be the time to get a wager on. It’s tough to feel a whole lot of confidence in any one team given how things have gone this season. We might need to learn to accept the unpredictable in March Madness this year, but one team is going to rise above the craziness and win it all. If you had to press me now to declare a winner, I would put my money on the West Virginia Mountaineers. No team is hotter than they are right now, and I can see them rolling all the way to March Madness.
