Outside of the playoff games, it is the bowl games reserved for New Year’s Day that tends to be the most glamorous of the bunch in bowl season. Generally speaking, the teams hitting the field on the first day of the year are those that were, at one point or another, in the playoff picture at some point during the regular season. They are all good games, but the final two of the day are the ones that we are perhaps looking forward to the most. The Rose Bowl features a pair of conference champions, while the Sugar Bowl features a Georgia Bulldogs team that many felt should have been in the top 4. They will face off against the Texas Longhorns. Let’s take a closer look at these two games.

If we are being totally honest, it was a bit of a disappointing year, as they were certainly among the preseason favorites to be in the playoffs. That said, the Huskies still managed to finish the season strong and come away with the Pac 12 Championship, taking down a weakened Utah Utes 10-3 in a defensive struggle. One of the biggest surprises this season was that the Huskies offense was not as high-powered as we expected, averaging 26 PPG. Washington are in as a 6 ½ point underdog for this one, which is only the 3rd time they have been in that position. In the other two games, they went 1-1 ATS.

After getting pounded by the Purdue Boilermakers, the Ohio State Buckeyes turned their season around, winning each of their last 5 games. They clinched the division with a stunning 62-39 win over Michigan in the final week of the regular season before rolling over Northwestern. Over the course of the season, the Buckeyes offense averaged a touch over 43 PPG. This will be the third time that they have faced Washington, with the Huskies winning all 3 meetings. The Buckeyes were 5-7 ATS as the favorite this season.

I think this one might be a little bit closer than some folks expect. I like the Buckeyes to win, but I do not believe they will cover.

The Texas Longhorns lost their opening game of the season, but they turned things around in a big way, getting themselves into the playoff picture in the process. They lost back to back games late in the season, but they recovered well enough to get to the Big 12 Championship Game, which they lost to Oklahoma. Texas are in as a 12-point underdog for this one, but the Longhorns performed quite well as the dog this season, going 2-1-1 ATS.

There was a lot of discussions that the Bulldogs deserved to be in the top 4, but a pair of losses in the season, including a heartbreaking loss to Alabama in the SEC Championship Game, doomed them. The players on this team still believe that they should have been in and seem to be waiting to show how good they are in this game. As a favorite, this season, Georgia went 7-5 ATS.

I think Georgia feel as though they have something to prove here, which is why I believe they will win and cover.
