It is the goal of every team in college football to make the playoffs and take a run at the National Championship, but only 4 teams get that shot each year. For those who end up on the outside looking in, the consolation prize is a spot in one of the New Year’s Six Bowl Games, all of which are viewed as a very nice reward for a great season. We will be taking a look at all those games, but let’s get things rolling with the first 3 games on the January 1 schedule.

This will be the first-ever meeting between these two teams, both of whom have made a habit of landing in Bowl games. For Iowa, this will be their 6th straight time playing during bowl season, although they only have 1 win in that stretch, with that one coming last year. For the Bulldogs, this will be their 9th bowl trip, with Mississippi State in as a 7½ point favorite over Iowa.

The Hawkeyes went 7-5 ATS this season, but they were not a very good bet coming down the stretch, managing to cover just once in their final 5 games. On the flipside, the Bulldogs covered the spread in 4 of their last 5 games, with the only game they failed to cover coming against Alabama, so no shame there. I am on the Bulldogs to win and cover.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish became the first team outside of the Power 5 to make it to the playoffs, but there are some who will argue that the UCF Knights deserved a shot, too. After all, they have now gone two straight seasons without taking a loss and will look to keep that going in the Fiesta Bowl against the LSU Tigers.

The Knight beat another SEC foe, the Auburn Tigers, this time last season, but they find themselves in as a 7-point underdog here. The Tigers had a solid 9-3 season, but they were just 2-5 ATS in games that they started as the favorite. UCF were only handed the underdog label twice this season, covering the spread in both of those games. I like the Knights to win in a shootout, covering in the process

Regardless of what happens here, this has been a fantastic season for the Kentucky Wildcats. They got to 9-3 on the season, largely due to the running abilities of Benny Snell, a young man who will be plying his trade in the NFL next season. He and the Wildcats will be coming into the Citrus Bowl as a 6½ point underdog, but can we expect one more piece of magic from Snell, who needs 107 yards to become the Wildcats best ever rusher? It is going to be a tough task for Kentucky, as they will be up against a Penn State team that is very good on both sides of the football. I am on the Nittany Lions to win and cover in this one.
