Week 6 College Football: Clemson at Wake Forest & Utah at Stanford
Our coverage of the Week 6 College Football action continues with a pair of picks and predictions for two more games.
The Clemson Tigers continue to remain in the top 4, but all is not well with that program as they prepare to go on the road to face the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.
The PAC-12 did not have anyone in the playoffs last season, but the Stanford Cardinal are looking to change that this year. They still have some work to do to convince the playoff committee and they will start by welcoming in the Utah Utes this coming Saturday.
Let’s take a closer look at these two big games.
Clemson Tigers at Wake Forest Demon Deacons
🏈: #4 Clemson Tigers at Wake Forest Demon Deacons
⏰: Sat. Oct 6, 2018 3:30 PM ET
🏟️: BB&T Field, Winston Salem, NC
📺: ESPN, DTV: 206
🎰: Clemson Tigers -18 -110 | O 62 -110
The Tigers have been one of the most stable programs in college football in recent years, but that is not the case this season. Yes, they are winning, but they created a QB controversy by putting Trevor Lawrence in as a starter ahead of Kelly Bryant, a move that prompted Bryant to transfer out. Lawrence was hurt last week, and his status is now up in the air. Clemson are still unbeaten, though, and are in as a 17 ½ point favorite here.
Wake Forest bounced back from a couple of tough losses back to back against Boston College and Notre Dame by beating up on Rice last week. The Demon Deacons are now 3-2 SU on the season, but they have only managed to cover once. While that may make them appear like a bad bet here, consider that they have covered in 6 of their last 8 trips to Clemson.
With the QB situation in Clemson still not really clear, I am a little concerned about taking the Tigers to cover. Yes, I think they win, but I am not so sure that it’s by a big margin.
Predicted Score: Clemson Tigers 38 Wake Forest Demon Deacons 24
Utah Utes at Stanford Cardinal
🏈: Utah Utes at #14 Stanford Cardinal
⏰: Sat. Oct 6, 2018 10:30 PM ET
🏟️: Stanford Stadium, Stanford, CA
📺: ESPN, DTV: 206
🎰: Stanford Cardinal -5 -110 | U 46½ -110
The Utes strong start to the season, where they opened with back to back wins, has been negated with 2 losses in a row, going down to Washington and Washington State. Through those 4 games, the Utes have covered just once, but they have still proven to be a decent ATS bet on the road, going 8-3 in their last 11 games away from home. They come into this one as a 5-point road underdog.
The Stanford Cardinal season is in danger of going south after losing to Notre Dame last week and losing star RB Bryce Love to injury in the process. While that loss, which came against another very good ranked team, does not take them out of the playoff picture altogether, it does make their path to the final four that much more difficult. The Cardinal are now 4-1 SU on the season and 3-2 ATS. In their last 7 games at home, Stanford have gone 5-2 ATS, so they may still be a good bet to cover.
I like Stanford to win this one at home, but I also think it is going to be a low-scoring scrap that stays close from start to finish. That is why I am looking at the Utes to cover in the loss.
Predicted Score: Utah Utes 20 Stanford Cardinal 24
