With the Kentucky Derby now in the rearview mirror, it’s time to start thinking about the second leg of the Triple Crown, which is the Preakness Stakes. As always, the Preakness will be run at Pimlico in Baltimore, with the race set to go at around 6:40 PM EST on Saturday, May 19. This is a much smaller field than what we saw at the Kentucky Derby, with just 8 horses set to go instead of the 20 that we saw at Churchill Downs a couple of weeks ago. This small field is a sure sign that Justify scared off a few owners and trainers with his win at the Derby, with many of the horses missing this one sure to show up at the Belmont Stakes, the final leg of the Triple Crown, in a couple of weeks. It may be a small field, but there are still a lot of talented horses in this race. Can any of them deliver the type of performance that can derail Justify, though, is the question we need to ask.

Current Odds at the Preakness Stakes

Justify is the current favorite at odds of 2/5, which means that you would need to play $5 just to get $2 in return. Those odds certainly do not offer much in the way of value, but plenty of bettors are going to look at what he did in the Derby and see this as a shot at some easy money. The second favorite on the board is Good Magic, one of only two horses, other than the Derby winner, who will be racing in the second leg of the Triple Crown. He ran second to Justify in the Derby, losing by 2 ½ lengths, and he is a horse that obviously likes the slop. Baltimore is expected to experience stormy weather this weekend, so look out.

After those two horses, there is a rather steep drop off in the betting odds, which is not really much of a surprise. The horse that I will definitely be keeping an eye on is Quip. He is a horse that can flash some blazing early speed, which could force some of the others into running a racing style that they are not particularly comfortable with. The Preakness is a shorter race than the Derby, so it’s going to be important to not let Quip get too far ahead in the early going.

If we do get a bit of a speed duel at the front here, this may well open the door for a horse with closing speed. If that is the case, then it would be Sporting Chance that would seem to be the most likely bet. Bravazo is another horse that you may want to look at, as he came in 6th at the Derby, albeit 8 lengths off the pace. The remaining horses in the field are serious longshots that wouldn’t appear to have much of a prayer.

How to Play Your Preakness Stakes Wagers

The Preakness Stakes has traditionally been the race where the favorites fall and lose their shot at the Triple Crown. In the 142 year history of this race, only 23 horses have completed the Kentucky Derby/Preakness Stakes double. If you believe that Justify can become number 24, play him on top in all your exotic wagers. If you are not quite so sure and you want a longshot pick, I would look at Quip.
