In a 7-game series, you can afford to have a bad game and a loss and still hope to rebound, but the margin for error goes right out the window when playing in a 5-game series.
That is exactly what we get with the ALDS and NLDS, where we have already seen a trio of teams bow out, 2 of whom were ousted via the sweep. We head into Game 4 of the final playoff series yet to be decided on Tuesday night, with the New York Yankees on the brink of elimination after taking an absolute pounding in Game 3.
While the Red Sox would love to be at home for this one, they would probably prefer getting the job done now and avoiding a tense affair in a Game 5. Boston were the best team in the MLB during the regular season, and their performance in the previous game against the Yankees shows that their stellar record was no fluke.
If the Red Sox can win here, they will head home to welcome in the current World Series champions, the Houston Astros.
ALDS: Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees (Game 4 - Home Game 2)
Why bet on the Boston Red Sox
It was always going to be interesting to see how this team responded after losing home field advantage by splitting the opening 2 games of this series.
I don’t think any of us expected the type of performance that they delivered in Game 5 in front of a hostile crowd at Yankee Stadium. The Red Sox went into that one as a slight underdog, yet they pounded the Yankees into submission with a 16-1 win. The game essentially was done after a 7-run inning for Boston vaulted them into a 10-run lead.
Of note in this game was the performance of Brett Holt of the Red Sox who went 4 for 6 with 5 RBI. That was a great stat line, but he also became the first ever player to hit for the cycle in a postseason game.
Every player in the line-up played a part in this win, though, giving Boston a serious edge in the series.
Why bet on the New York Yankees
You really have to wonder how the Yankees are going to be able to rebound from such a heavy beating, especially one that came at home.
The Yankee bats were cold for the first time in the series in this one and they need to get back to the long ball team that led the league in dingers this season if they are to avoid elimination.
The Yankees will be handing the ball to CC Sabathia (9-7, 3.65 ERA) for this one and will be hoping that his experience will help settle the early nerves. The bad news here is that he lasted just 3 innings in his last plate appearance against Boston in a game that the Yankees ultimately lost 15-7.
Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction
The Red Sox will be starting Rick Porcello (17-7, 4.28 ERA) in this one, although he did make a brief appearance earlier in this series. He has appeared in 5 games against the Yankees this season, with Boston winning 4 of those games.
