The final Saturday of the MLB season looks to be a good one, as we still have some playoff details that need to be decided over in the National League.
It goes without saying that the Cardinals/Cubs series is the most important of the lot, but we have our eye on a few other series taking place over the final weekend of the season. All told, we will be quickly previewing 4 games here, with Predictions and MLB Picks in place for each, so let’s get right to it.
New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox
These two great rivals could potentially be meeting up in the opening round of the postseason, assuming that the Yankees can take care of the A’s in the Wild Card Game.
While the Yankees would love to get one over on their rivals in the final series of the year, they have been pretty awful when playing at Fenway, going just 1-6 in earlier meetings this season. You have to feel as though another win is coming soon, and I think it might just happen on Saturday. Lance Lynn will start for the Yankees and is always good for 5 or 6 innings, surrendering just 2 RPG in his last 3.
I like the Yankees to edge this one.
Predicted Score: New York Yankees 5 Boston Red Sox 4
St. Louis Cardinals at Chicago Cubs
The Cardinals are in freefall at the moment and are in real danger of missing out on the playoffs.
Heading into Thursday, the Cardinals are a game back of the final Wild Card spot, but they are doing little to help their own cause, losing 3 straight games to start the week. They are not going to get any help from a Chicago Cubs team grimly holding on to the top spot in the NL Central.
Leading the Brewers by a half game. The Cubs know what it takes to win at this stage of the season, and with Cole Hamels (9-11, 3.87 ERA) on the mound here, I think they win again.
Predicted Score: St. Louis Cardinals 2 Chicago Cubs 5
Pittsburgh Pirates at Cincinnati Reds (Reds Team Photo Giveaway)
Given how poor the Cincinnati Reds have been this season, it will be interesting to see how many people hold onto their free gift on Reds Team Photo Giveaway night at the ballpark.
This is not a team that anyone really cares to remember, as they have just 66 wins on the season, with a mere 36 of those wins coming in front of their home fans.
The Reds haven’t been able to beat very many teams this season, but they have been in particularly tough against the Pirates, going just 4-12 in their meetings this season. Jameson Taillon (14-9, 3.16 ERA) has had a solid year for the Pirates and I like him to get the win in this one.
Predicted Score: Pittsburgh Pirates 6 Cincinnati Reds 3
Detroit Tigers at Milwaukee Brewers (Fan Appreciation Night)
There should be a nice crowd on hand at Miller Park for Fan Appreciation Night this Saturday, and this Brewers team is certainly worthy of that love.
They are now just a half game back of the Cubs for the division lead and have already clinched a spot in the postseason.
They will close out the regular season with a series against the lowly Detroit Tigers, who have gone just 6-11 in interleague play.
The Brewers are 3 games above .500 against teams from the AL, so I like them to come out and get the win on what could potentially be a huge night.
Predicted Score: Detroit Tigers 1 Milwaukee Brewers 6
