Who Will Be the National League and American League Cy Young Winners?
The Cy Young award is highly coveted in baseball, and this year we’ll have two new awardees from both the National League and the American League. We’re coming up to half way through the season, and at this time, we can start to get an idea about what the post season will look like. Most importantly, we can start to have a look at some of the stats and predictions to provide some insight towards who might be in line for this year’s awards. We’ve collected data from the MLB, ESPN, and other leading news outlets, to see who the most likely winners will be for the Cy Young award this year.
Cy Young Award Prediction in the National League
In The National League we see the odds as being quite tight at the top, but then spread out as we start to enter the lower end of the top ten picks. ESPN has one of the best algorithms to look at when considering current performance and potential Cy Young winners, so let’s take a look at what this network has predicted in the NL. ESPN’s Top 10 for the Cy Young Predictor is as follows:1. Clayton Kershaw (Los Angeles Dodgers)2. Max Scherzer (Washington Nationals)3. Kenley Jansen (Los Angeles Dodgers)4. Alex Wood (Los Angeles Dodgers)5. Stephen Strasburg (Washington Nationals)6. Greg Holland (Colorado Rockies)7. Jim Johnson (Atlanta Braves)8. Zack Greinke (Arizona Diamondbacks)9. Jacob deGrom (New York Mets)10. Gio Gonzalez (Washington Nationals)Here we can see that the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Washington Nationals have the most representation in the top 10, and if we look outside of ESPN at some of the other expert picks, we can see a similar picture. Betting odds favor Clayton Kershaw and Max Scherzer in most cases, although there are some differences in the rest of the list. As an example, some bookmakers have Noah Syndergaard (New York Mets) ranked in the top five, so there’s definitely some different analysis and prediction that can be done. Keep in mind that Cy Young winners are voted in, so any prediction could easily change as the year progresses. However, in terms of the top two names on the ESPN prediction list, most experts agree that they are frontrunners, especially considering their consistent performance so far in 2017.
Cy Young Award Prediction in the American League
Chris Sale is a name that is regularly coming up when it comes to predictions for the Cy Young award. A number of experts from ESPN, Sports Illustrated, Yahoo Sports, and CBS Sports, have all named Sale as the most likely winner. There are other names being put forward in the American League, but not with the same kind of confidence that we’re seeing for Chris Sale. Players like Corey Kluber and Aaron Sanchez have been mentioned more than once. ESPN uses a prediction algorithm that includes strikeouts, saves, and shutouts, among other statistics. Currently, ESPNs own prediction algorithm still holds Chris Sale at the top, and he holds quite a significant margin over Craig Kimbrel. The Boston Red Sox will definitely be happy that they have such strong talents in pitching at the moment. ESPN’s Top 10 for the Cy Young Predictor is as follows:1. Chris Sale (Boston Red Sox)2. Craig Kimbrel (Boston Red Sox)3. Dallas Keuchel (Houston Astros)4. Jason Vargas (Kansas City Royals)5. Brandon Kintzler (Minnesota Twins)6. Carlos Carrasco (Cleveland Indians)7. Drew Pomeranz (Boston Red Sox)8. Roberto Osuna (Toronto Blue Jays)9. Ervin Santana (Minnesota Twins)10. Alex Colome (Tampa Bay Rays)
Other Sports Network Favorites for the Cy Young Award in 2017
When looking at the predictions from Fox Sports, we can see that Chris Sale is right up there in the predictions for the American League. Fox named the better defensive squad at the Red Sox, along with running support, which would help Sale to shine this year. Corey Kluber was also a top pick of Fox Sports. Although Kluber failed to rank in the ESPN top 10 prediction, Fox Sports thinks that this might be the year. According to Jerry Lai who writes for USA Today Sports, Kluber may be able to seal the deal this season, after finishing third in the voting for the Cy Young award in 2016.One prediction from Sports Illustrated also saw Chris Sale as the most likely to get the Cy Young Award in the American League. SI mentioned that the high intensity atmosphere to be found within the Red Sox would be exactly the change in pace that Sale needs.Sports Illustrated favors Clayton Kershaw for the Cy Young award in the National League. The publication argues that even with a third of the season lost to injuries last year, Kershaw still managed to get some votes for the 2016 award. If he can avoid injuries this year, then it might just be his chance to take home a fourth Cy Young. Let’s not forget that it was just three years ago that Kershaw took home a Cy Young Award as well as an MVP award for the National League. He’s still young and in his prime, so he definitely has what it takes to attract the votes that he needs. The experts at Sports Illustrated were also slightly optimistic about the chances for Noah Syndergaard. They see him as the ‘other choice’ if Kershaw doesn’t clinch the title. 2017 will only be Syndergaard’s second full season, and he performed exceptionally well last year. He could still be on the rise, so he shouldn’t be ruled out.
Plenty to Think About as the Year Progresses
There are plenty of names to think about as the year progresses, although you can consider names like Chris Sale and Clayton Kershaw to be safe picks. The good thing about making picks for the Cy Young award is that there’s always a decent spread, which allows for some creative picks without a lot of risk.
