The final weekend of the season begins on Friday night, with the playoff spots in the National League potentially not being decided until the final day of the regular season, which comes on Sunday.
We have already delivered our MLB Picks for Friday and Saturday, so we are now going to jump ahead to closing day to see if we can come up with some more winners, It has been a strong week of selections, so let‘s see if we can add some more money to your bankroll before the postseason action begins.
New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox
These two already know that they are going to be in the postseason, but there is a very good chance that they could be hooking up in the early stages.
The Yankees are very close to clinching home-field advantage against the Oakland A’s in the Wild Card Game, which could potentially make them the favorite to move on to face the team with the best record in baseball. Just how good the Red Sox have been this year can be seen in their home record against their bitter rivals.
They are 8-1 in the 9 games that they have played against the Yankees at Fenway this season. They are also 56-22 overall at home, so no-one has had any real success there. It’s a good pitching match-up on Sunday with Severino and Porcello going head to head. Porcello has been stellar this season, going 17-4 with a 4.33 ERA, which is why I am siding with the Red Sox.
Predicted Score: New York Yankees 2 Boston Red Sox 3
St. Louis Cardinals at Chicago Cubs
The biggest series of the weekend comes to a close on Sunday, with the biggest question here being whether the playoff spots will all be decided by this point.
The Cubs are hanging on to a 1-game lead at the top of the Central, while the Cardinals need to win this series and get some help to sneak into the Wild Card, where they are a game off the pace right now. The one thing that stands out when looking at this match-up is who the Cardinals will be sending to the mound on Sunday.
They will be starting Jack Flaherty (8-8, 3.16 ERA), and while his numbers are fine, the Cardinals have lost each of the last 5 games that he has started. That does not inspire a lot of confidence in me, which is why I am on the Cubs here.
Predicted Score: St. Louis Cardinals 3 Chicago Cubs 4
Pittsburgh Pirates at Cincinnati Reds (Reds Team Photo Giveaway)
While there is a great battle raging for the NL Central crown, the Pirates and the Reds have not been part of it at all this season. They are both well off the pace being set by the Cubs and the Brewers at the top, with this series being all about salvaging some sort of pride before the season comes to a close.
Neither team is playing particularly well at the moment, although the Reds are slightly worse, coming into this series having lost 5 straight games. Their record at home (36-42) is exactly the same as what the Pirates are doing on the road, so no real home field advantage there.
The Reds have not announced their starter for this one, but the Pirates will be going with Chris Archer (6-8, 4.31 ERA), who has won each of his last 2 starts. I’m on the Pirates to win this one.
Predicted Score: Pittsburgh Pirates 4 Cincinnati Reds 2
