NFL Betting: Are the Rams Still Contenders for the NFC West Title?
Week 5 was a treat for fans of both the Seahawks and the Rams on NFL betting, providing for one of the toughest games that we’ve seen either team play this year. The RAMS have been a revelation in 2017, surprising both fans and analysts with their vastly improved offensive power and finesse.
While it wasn’t quite enough to get them a win in a grueling Week 5 game against the Seahawks, there are still a lot of positives to take, and bettors should not rule the Los Angeles Rams out of contention for the NFC West Title. As it stands at the end of Week 5, the Rams are only marginally behind the Seahawks in the division table, and both teams have a 3 – 2 – 0 record at this early stage of the season. There’s plenty of football left to be played, and there’s plenty of promise that the Rams have already shown.

NFC West, Turnovers Need to be Addressed
If the Rams want a serious shot at taking the NFC West division title this year, they’re going to need to analyze what happened with the turnovers that happened in this game, and then ensure that they limit incidents like these in the future. The good news for the Rams is that they didn’t play badly by any stretch of the imagination. Some of the fumbles were forced by pressure, and were more to do with the Seattle Seahawks bringing their best offensive game, rather than the Rams playing poorly.
Even so, the Rams do need to be prepared for strong offenses in the league. They showed against the Dallas Cowboys that they can handle a strong offense, but the Seahawks were just a little too much to overcome, especially in the second half of the game. One positive takeaway (depending on how you look at it) is that the Rams only conceded six points in the game, and lost by a small margin. This is similar to what happened against the Washington Redskins in Week 2, and it could even be argued that the Rams were more competitive against the Seahawks than they were against the Redskins at that early stage of the season.
There’s Still Rookie Talent on the Rams Team
It was revealed in this game that we may not have even seen the best that the Rams have to offer. Throughout the beginning of this season, there has been plenty of talk about the Rams’ offensive power, as well as the performance of some of their second year NFL players. The Rams have some talent rookies on the team, and not all of them have had the chance to shine yet. This was clear when safety John Johnson got his time on the field in Week 5’s game.
Selected as a Round 3 NFL Draft pick, Johnson has been waiting for an opportunity to show what he can do in the professional league. When Maurice Alexander not hitting his potential lately, Johnson was given the start. He was impressive with two pass deflections and an interception, this young player could be a future star to watch with the Rams. He has at least proved that he was a strong draft pick, and with the right training his talent can only go up from here.
The Rams Equal the Seahawk’s Season Record So Far
Although the Rams are second place in the NFC West table, they match the Seattle Seahawks in all of the division stats that matter, and even outrank them on some of them. Looking at these, anybody betting on the team for a division win, can take a lot of confidence from what there is to see. Both teams have won three games, and lost two.
However, two of Seattle’s losses have come from within the division, whereas the Rams have only lost once inside the NFC West. The Rams have also shown a better road record, winning both of their road games, whereas Seattle has lost two of theirs.
The Rams do trail on their home record, which is something of a concern. If they want to be able to develop a strong following within Los Angeles, then they’re going to need to give local fans a reason to head out to the L.A. Memorial Coliseum. Los Angeles Rams have conceded more points than the Seattle Seahawks, but they’ve also scored more, which gives them with a higher Net Points figure of 31, compared to 23 for Seattle.
In fact, the only reason that Seattle are at the top of the table right now, is because they have won both of their division games. Looking at every other metric, and looking at the way that both teams play, there is very little between them at this early stage of the season.
The Division Title will be Fought Between the Seahawks and the Rams
The San Francisco 49ers would need a miracle to happen if they are to win the division title. They haven’t won a single game this year, have scored just 89 points to the 120 that they’ve conceded, and they’re at the bottom of the division. The Arizona Cardinals, a team which we had earlier predicted to be better than the Rams, have been underwhelming this year. They’ve lost more games than they’ve won, and they’ve got a 1 – 3 record for games within the NFC. The battle this year is going to be between the Rams and the Seahawks.
We know that the Rams can beat the Cardinals and the 49ers. They’ve also shown that they can win on the road and win outside of the division, even against a power team like the Cowboys. There’s going to be a lot of football between now and December when the Rams play the Seahawks again, and it looks likely that L.A. will be able to carry momentum, grow as a team, and put up a serious challenge for the division title in 2017.
