NFL Trio of Action: Jets Vs Bills; Panthers Vs Browns & Falcons Vs Packers
The Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns, and Green Bay Packers will all be looking to play the role of home spoiler when they take to the field for their respective week 14 matchups. With the Bills hosting the Jets, the Browns hosting the Panthers and Packers at home against the Atlanta Falcons, let’s find out if all three home teams can get the ATS cover with the first weekly edition of our Trio of Action.
New York Jets at Buffalo Bills
The Jets have lost six straight but they put up a great fight before coming up just short in their 26-22 road loss to Tennessee on Sunday as Josh McCown passed for a modest 128 yards and one touchdown and Isaiah Crowell rushed for a team-high 98 yards. New York was limited to just six points in the second half while giving up 20 second-half points to the Titans. The Jets average 20.2 points per game (26th) while giving up 25.6 points per contest defensively (22nd).
“Dumb mistakes at dumb times cost us ballgames, and that’s why we’re in the position we’re in,” Bowles said.
Buffalo is coming off a hard-fought 21-17 loss against Miami on Sunday that snapped their modest two-game losing streak. Rookie quarterback Josh Allen passed for 231 yards with two touchdowns, but he also tossed a pair of costly interceptions and defensive tackle Jordan Phillips committed a foolish penalty late that cost the Bills a shot at going for the win.
“This one hurts a lot,” Allen said.
The Bills averaged a pitiful 14.8 points per game (31st) while giving up 24.4 points per contest defensively (18th).
• Jets are 15-6-2 ATS in their last 23 games in December.
• Jets are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 vs. AFC.
• Jets are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games following a ATS win.
• Jets are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a straight up loss.
• Jets are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games.
• Jets are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games overall
• Jets are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 vs. AFC East.
• Bills are 4-9 ATS in their last 13 vs. AFC East.
• Bills are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games in Week 14.
While the Underdog in this AFC East rivalry has gone 6-1 ATS in their last 7 meetings, the Home team is 9-4 ATS in their last 13 meetings and the Jets are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 meetings and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 road dates against Buffalo. I’m going with Buffalo to hold it down at home in this contest and you should too.
Predicted Score: Buffalo Bills 24 | New York Jets 17
Carolina Panthers at Cleveland Browns
Carolina is reeling at the worst possible time. The Panthers have lost four straight and come into this Week 14 matchup off a discouraging 24-17 road loss against Tampa Bay on Sunday. Veteran quarterback Cam Newton had one of his worst games as a pro. The Panthers former MVP passed for 300 yards and two touchdowns, but he also tossed four highly damaging interceptions in the loss. Carolina averages 25.3 points per game (11th) while allowing 25.5 points per contest defensively (21st).
“I’ve just got to play better,” said Newton. “That’s what it comes down to. As a signal-caller, as a quarterback, it’s hard to point blame when you’ve got to first account for yourself in the mirror. When I look back at this game, it really comes down to protecting the football.”
The Browns had their modest two-game winning streak snapped in their humbling 29-13 road loss to Houston on Sunday as rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield was picked off by Houston’s ravenous defense three times in the loss. Cleveland averages 22.2 points per game (20th) while allowing 26.0 points per contest defensively (26th).
“(If) I would’ve taken care of the ball, this game would’ve been very close,” he said.
• Panthers are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games in December.
• Panthers are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS loss.
• Panthers are 1-5 ATS vs. a team with a losing record.
• Panthers are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 road games.
• Panthers are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games overall.
• Browns are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games in Week 14.
• Browns are 16-37-1 ATS in their last 54 games overall.
I know Carolina is in the midst of some serious struggles, but I’ve got to believe the fact that the Panthers are completely and utterly desperate is going to be the deciding factor around the outcome of this matchup. The Panthers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games in Week 14 and a robust 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games following a straight up loss. Conversely, the Browns are just 8-19 ATS in their last 27 home games and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games in the month of December. Carolina has the far better defense in this matchup, plus they’ve got some great talent at the skill positions, even if Newton has been horrible at getting the ball lately. The Panthers will win and win big to cover the spread NFL betting buffs!
Predicted Score: Carolina Panthers 31 | Cleveland Browns 21
Atlanta Falcons at Green Bay Packers
The Falcons have dropped four straight games and come into this contest off a humbling 26-15 smackdown loss against Baltimore on Sunday. Veteran quarterback Matt Ryan was limited to just 131 passing yards with one touchdown, but he lost a fumble that was returned for a touchdown and Atlanta was limited to just six second-half points in a game they never really had a chance in.
“We never really got anything going,” Ryan said. “That makes it tough when you really are not moving it and you’re letting them kind of dictate the game. That’s a tough pill to swallow.”
Green Bay has lost three straight and five of their last six games overall including their stunning 20-17 home loss against an awful Arizona Cardinals team on Sunday. Aaron Rodgers passed for 233 yards and one touchdown, but the Packers were limited to just seven second-half points. Kicker Mason Crosby missed a potential game-tying field goal in the loss, which eventually cost longtime head coach Mike McCarthy his job by the time Monday morning rolled around.
“Like any relationship we’ve had amazing times and times when we butt heads,” Rodgers said when asked about his relationship with his former head coach. “We accomplished a lot together.”
You know things are bad when you’re set to face a team that has been so awful this season that they just fired their head coach, yet you’re still a near touchdown underdog.
No matter, however, I’m going to urge you to back Atlanta to get the ATS cover at the very least in this Week 14 matchup of teams that were supposed to challenge for a playoff berth but have fallen well short. Atlanta has the edge in scoring while the Packers allow fewer points per game defensively.
Atlanta has gone 4-1 ATS in their last five games in Week 14 while Green Bay has gone 1-4 ATS in their last five games following an SU loss while also going 1-5-1 ATS in their last seven games against their NFC counterparts. The Falcons are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 meetings in Green Bay and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings overall while the road team in this series has gone 9-3 ATS in the last 12 meetings. Atlanta covers the chalk in something of a shootout.
