NFL Week 16 Monday Night: Steelers vs Texans, Raiders vs Eagles
If you needed any excuse to get the presents opened and dinner out of the way early, how about a Christmas Day double-header in the NFL? The action gets started at 4:30 PM with the Pittsburgh Steelers heading to Houston to face the Texans, looking to make sure that they stay where they are as one of the top two seeds in the AFC. That is followed up by the traditional Monday night game, with this one featuring the Oakland Raiders heading to Philadelphia to face an Eagles team desperately trying to hold on to their #1 ranking in the NFC. Let’s take a closer look at both of these games and get in the betting preview for each game.
Pittsburgh Steelers vs Houston Texans
Date/Time: Monday, December 25, 4:30 p.m. EDT
Location: NRG Stadium, Houston, TX
Game Odds: Pittsburgh -9
The Steelers are coming into this one with a massive chip on their shoulders after letting one slip in controversial style against the New England Patriots last weekend. Unless you have been hiding under a rock, you will know all about the overturned Jesse James TD in the dying seconds that may well have cost the Steelers the #1 spot in the AFC. They will also be coming into this one without Antonio Brown, who was injured last week, but there is more than enough receiving talent on this team to make up for that loss. The Steelers have been dominant on the road this season, going 6-1 SU and winning 5-straight. That said, they are just 1-5 ATS in their last 6 overall.
The Houston Texans have been hammered by injuries to key personnel this season, and are going out with a bit of a whimper. They have now lost 6 of their last 7 games, and have been picked apart by opposing offenses nowhere near as talented as the one they will be facing on Monday afternoon. While things have been poor this season, this is still a team that has won 11 of their last 16 games at home. That said, they are just 2-5 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
The Steelers are in as a 9-point favorite for this one, with the point total set at 45. I like Pittsburgh to win and cover, and the total to go UNDER.
Predicted Score: Pittsburgh Steelers 27 Houston Texans 17
Philadelphia Eagles vs Oakland Raiders
Date/Time: Monday, December 25, 8:30 p.m. EDT
Location: Oakland–Alameda County Coliseum
Game Odds: Philadelphia -9
The Oakland Raiders were one of the best offensive teams in the league last year but saw their season essentially end when QB Derek Carr broke his leg late in the season. The belief was that this team would come back bigger and better this year, but at 6-8, they are 1 loss away from being officially eliminated from playoff contention. They have folded coming down the stretch, losing back to back games, and failing to make a mark on the offensive side of the football in those outings. Oakland is just 1-4 SU in their last 5 games on the road, and have only managed to go 1-4-2 ATS in their last 7 regular season games.
The comparisons between the Eagles of this season and the Raiders of last year were immediately drawn when QB Carson Wentz went down with a season-ending injury. Nick Foles has come in and held this team steady, bringing them back from behind against the Giants last weekend to secure the win and help the Eagles maintain their #1 ranking in the NFC. That’s is where they will want to stay, but they have the Minnesota Vikings breathing right down their necks, so a win here is a must. Philly is an unbeaten 6-0 at home this season, going 5-1 ATS in those games.
The Eagles are in as a 9-point favorite, with the point total set at 47. Let’s go with the Eagles to win and cover, and let’s also play the OVER.
Predicted Score: Oakland Raiders 17 Philadelphia Eagles 31
