NFL Week 5: Atlanta Falcons at Pittsburgh Steelers
After squashing their ongoing drama with a big win in Week 3, Ben Roethlisberger and the reeling Pittsburgh Steelers were back to underachieving in a big way this past weekend. Still, Pittsburgh hasn’t suffered consecutive crushing losses like Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons have the last two weeks.
Now, with both Super Bowl hopefuls looking to pick up a much-needed win in NFL Week 5, let’s find out who’s offering the best betting value against their respective NFL betting odds.

Atlanta Falcons (1-3)
Atlanta is coming off a crushing 37-36 loss against Cincinnati on Sunday that comes a week after their equally deflating 43-37 overtime loss against New Orleans in Week 3. Matt Ryan completed 29 of 39 passes for 419 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions, but it wasn’t enough to overcome three TD passes by Cincy’s Andy Dalton and two scoring runs from veteran back Giovani Bernard.
Falcons head coach Dan Quinn said his team lacks the instinct needed “to close the door” with a lead. “We’re going to develop that instinct,” he said. “We do not have it as we need it right now.”
Ryan, the 2016 league MVP, has thrown eight touchdown passes in his past two games and has 10 through four games after throwing only 20 in 2017. The Falcons may be ranked a pitiful 29th in points allowed (30.5 ppg), but Matt Ryan and his merry mates have been fantastic in averaging a stellar 29.0 points per game to rank sixth in scoring.
Pittsburgh Steelers (1-2-1)
The Steelers got completely manhandled in their humbling 26-14 home loss against Baltimore on Sunday night. Ben Roethlisberger completed just 27 of 47 passes for 274 yards with one touchdown and one interception in the loss and the Steelers were held to just 19 total rushing yards while allowing Joe Flacco to throw for 363 yards and two scores.
“I’m not on the same page with anybody right now,” the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback said when asked whether he’s on the same page with star receiver Antonio Brown.
The offense held the ball for a mind-boggling 2 minutes and 40 seconds in the fourth quarter.
“We gotta make it happen,” Brown said.
The Steelers are ranked a pitiful 25th in points allowed (29.0 ppg), but they are also ranked a decent 11th in scoring 925.0 ppg).
Expert Pick and Prediction
While the Falcons have lost consecutive heartbreakers, I’ve been impressed with the way Matt Ryan and company have been putting points on the board recently. The Falcons have scored at least 31 points in each of their last three games and I think they’re going to be able to put their fair share of points on the board against a Steelers defense that has been uninspiring at best this season.
In a matchup in which both team are playing little to no defense this season, I say, back the team with the more explosive offense and that is the Atlanta Falcons. While Atlanta has gone 1-4 ATS in their last five road games, the Falcons are also 4-2 ATS in their last six games against the Steelers while Pittsburgh has gone 1-4 ATS in its last five games. I like Atlanta for the outright win in an absolute shootout.
