NFL Week 5: Jacksonville Jaguars at Kansas City Chiefs
For NFL Week 5, after watching Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs beat the hell out of their first four opponents this season, Blake Bortles and the ‘defense-first’ Jacksonville Jaguars will get their chance to become the first team this season to hand K.C. a loss.
While no one really knew what to expect out of the Chiefs this season because they were placing their future in the hands of a first-time starter, Kansas City has soared behind Mahomes, who has become an ‘instant star’ this season.
Now, with both teams looking to make a statement, let’s find out which team is offering the best value in this matchup.

Jacksonville Jaguars (3-1)
Jacksonville improved to 3-1 on the season by beating the rebuilding New York Jets 31-12 to cash in as a 7.5-point home favorite just as I predicted last week. Veteran quarterback Blake Bortles threw two touchdown passes including a 67-yarder to Donte Moncrief and the Jags’ defense harassed Jets rookie quarterback Sam Darnold throughout.
“(The defense) played incredibly again today,” Bortles said. “There were some sloppy parts of the game that we’ve got to clean up, but to give them some points to go play with the lead was good.”
Jacksonville sacked Darnold three times and nearly came away with three interceptions in the commanding win.
“It’s just growth. That’s the easiest way to say it,” Jaguars defensive tackle Malik Jackson said. “We’ve got to be consistent like this all time. Offense dropped the ball last week, so to speak, but this week they picked it up and put 500 yards on the board.
Kansas City Chiefs (4-0)
Kansas City had a tough matchup on their hands on Monday night but managed to get past the AFC West division rival Broncos 27-23 as Patrick Mahomes II added to his growing legend by rallying K.C. back from a 10-point fourth quarter deficit for the win. Mahomes threw a pass left-handed as he was about to be sacked by Denver’s Von Miller on the Chiefs’ game-winning drive late in the fourth quarter.
“He’s actually more athletic than people realize,” Denver linebacker Brandon Marshall said. “People talk about his arm, but he can move out of the pocket and make the necessary throws.”
Mahomes completed 28 of 45 passes for 304 yards with one touchdown and no picks and he navigated the pocket flawlessly in getting sacked just once by Denver’s vaunted defense. Running back Kareem Hunt rushed for 121 yards and one score on 19 carries and Mahomes added a rushing score of his own in the win.
“We played well and we got to him but he would scramble out to his right as he likes to do,” Marshall added. “It’s almost like we’d have him in our fingertips and he’d scramble away and throw for a first down. The kid can play. He’s going to be really good. He’s really good right now, but we should have won the game.”
Expert Pick and Prediction
The Jacksonville Jaguars have a great defense, but quarterback Blake Bortles is borderline awful and clearly nowhere near as good as Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes – and that will be the difference in this affair.
Not only are Mahomes and the Chiefs putting points on the board like they’re going out of style, but more importantly, the second-year signal-caller is not making mistakes with a phenomenal 14 TD passes and no interceptions.
While Jacksonville has gone 5-1 ATS in its last six games and a robust 10-4 ATS in their last 14 road games, Kansas City has gone 8-1 ATS in their last nine games, 4-1ATS in their last five home games and 4-2 ATS in their last six dates against the Jags.
I like the modest field goal spread in this contest and I’m going with Kansas City to get ‘er done!
