Four Players You Need to Watch in the Premier League This Year
The English Premier League is one of the most talent-packed competitions in soccer. Along with the MLB in the United States, La Liga in Spain, and the Bundesliga in Germany, the Premier League is one of the four corners of world football. Picking winning teams in the league is always made easier when you know more about the players, which is why it’s so important to get familiar with some of the most promising players of the 2017 – 18 season. We’ve covered a number of the top players and teams already, and here are four Premier League players to keep in mind whenever you’re making predictions this season.
Premier League Players:
Jack Butland – Stoke City
Stoke has had a strong start to the season. They lost in their first game against Everton in Early August, but then went on to beat Arsenal, draw against West Brom, and then draw with a 2 – 2 game against the much higher ranked Manchester United. One of the reasons why Stoke have been so competitive, is because of the skill of goalkeeper Jack Butland. Butland is one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League, if not the very best. A number of insiders have tipped him to become the next no.1 goalkeeper for the England national team, removing Joe Hart from his current position. Comparing Butland to Hart in the 2017 – 18 premier league, Butland has a better stat for goals conceded, he has made more saves, and he has better stats for saves per goal. Butland is clearly the better player this year, but that’s no guarantee that he will be selected for England.Even if he doesn’t make the national team, he’ll still be able to continue with his impressive performances in the Premier League. Stoke City will benefit from his skill in the box, and having a talented keeper can help to even the field when playing against some of the stronger teams in the league.
Willian Borges da Silva – Chelsea
Referred to simply as Willian by his fans and his team, this Brazilian footballer is now a veteran of the Chelsea team, and continues to be one of their most valuable players. He’s not a leading scorer, but that’s not where his true talents are. This year he has appeared in four games with zero goals, but he’s one of the best playmakers that Chelsea has. He’s also an incredibly hard working player who shows a high level of fitness that allows him to be anywhere and everywhere on the field. His dribbling skills are impressive, characterized by evasive techniques and feints that he uses to get past his opponents. His style is characteristically Brazilian, meaning that it’s flamboyant but highly effective and sometimes disruptive to the defense of opposing teams. He’s versatile on the wing and as an attacking midfielder, and he’s able to step up when other players are dropping in performance. In the 2015 – 16 season, he impressed a number of fans and analysts by covering an attacking role in the team as Eden Hazard was going through a slump. This had many calling him the breakout player of that year.
Gabriel Jesus – Manchester City
Gabriel was new to the Premier League in 2016, and in just 11 games he scored seven goals for the team. This year, after five games, he has already scored four goals, proving that he’s an essential part of the forward pack in Manchester City. Jesus is impressive because of the versatility that he offers. Manchester City is a team that can benefit from having options and depth in their squad, and Jesus definitely satisfies all of the requirements. He is skilled as a winger, as a center forward, and as an attacking midfielder. One of his biggest assets is his fitness and athleticism. He’s capable of short bursts of impressive speed, yet he doesn’t fade in the late stage of the game. His ball handling skills are also impressive, and he has the characteristic flair of a South American football player. Jesus is exciting to watch, and he’s clearly one of the rising stars in the Manchester City team. Expect this young player to light up the scoreboards this year, and finish with his best ever goal record in the Premier League.
Pascal Gross – Brighton & Hove Albion
Brighton & Hove Albion is new to the Premier League and it’s not yet clear how they will perform after their promotion, but that doesn’t mean that they’re short of talent. If we had to single out a player who is an over performer with the potential to push his team this year, then Pascal Gross would be the most obvious one. Gross played in the Bundesliga throughout his career, from 2008 up until the the 2016 – 17 season. He made the switch to the Premier League for the first time this season, and he has played in four games and scored two goals in the first month of the competition. Gross is a midfielder, so he’s considered more of a playmaker than an outright attacker. Even though he’s more content to set up opportunities than to be the one to receive them, it doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have the ability to score goals. His two goals in 2017 already make him one of the top goal scorers in the competition, and it will be interesting to see what else he can bring to the team throughout the rest of the season. Gross was instrumental in securing The Seagulls’ recent win against West Brom, with a final score of 3 – 1 at Amex Stadium. His value is definitely rising in the Premier League, and he could help the team to an impressive debut season.
