If you’re a tennis lover like we are, then it’s a great time of year.
The first grand slam of the new season is quickly approaching and along with it, racket betting enthusiasts everywhere are going to have a good chance to cash in with a potentially winning wager – if they can identify the men on the ATP Tour that are most likely to bring home the hardware at the first slam event of the year.
Thankfully, that’s where I come in with our expert analysis and predictions on our top five picks to win this year’s men’s title. Will it be two-time defending champion Roger Federer who is looking to become the first man to ever win seven Aussie Open titles? Or maybe it’ll be the incendiary Novak Djokovic who is looking to claim his third straight slam – while also seeking to become the first seven-time winner Down Under. Or…maybe it’s someone else that upsets the entire apple cart.
With the 2019 Australian Open taking place from January 14-27, live from Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Australia, let’s get down to business.
Roger Federer +500
Roger Federer struggled with an injury I the second half of last year that kept his from playing his best tennis at both, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, where he was knocked out before the finals in both events. Federer might also be 37-years-old but generally, you’d never know it the way he effortlessly glides around the tennis court.
Federer has won this event in each of the last two years and made a great run through the Hopman Cup just over a week ago while beating world No. 4 Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Cameron Norrie, and Frances Tiafoe along the way. If Federer gets a favorable draw, there’s no doubt he could win a third straight Aussie Open title.
Novak Djokovic +115
My, how time flies. Six months ago, the 31-year-old Novak Djokovic was a whopping +700 pick to win Wimbledon after an uninspiring start to his 2018 campaign that had everyone wonder if the once dominant superstar would ever reclaim the vice-like grip he’s held on the sport for the better part of the last three or four years.
Now, after stunning the field en route to the title at Wimbly and then basically blowing the field away to win the 2018 U.S. Open as well, Djokovic is now, the clear-cut favorite to win here. Like Federer and all of the other highly-ranked veterans, Djokovic now has to deal with the likes of up-and-coming young stars like Zverev, Tsitsipas and others like Karen Kachanov. Still, he’s the favorite here for a reason.
Alexander Zverev +900
The gifted 21-year-old German is starting to really look like he’s ready to fulfill all of his seemingly endless potentials after claiming the 2018 year-end ATP Finals in London in November with a title-clinching win over Djokovic, no less. While Zverev has 10 career titles and a trio of highly-coveted Masters 1000 titles, he’s struggled in slam events with an unassuming 22-14 career mark. However, I’m thinking he’s going to really challenge for his first grand slam title this year and really, Zverev has the game to beat anyone on any given day.
Marin Čilić +2500
The 30-year-old Croatian reached the finals opposite Federer last year and even though he collapsed in the fifth set, Marin Čilić put up a great effort after falling down two sets to one to get it to a fifth and deciding set. With 18 career titles, one grand slam title (2014 U.S. Open) and 1 ATP Masters 100 title, Cilic has plenty of history of success at big events, even if it hasn’t quite matched his immense talent level. I see absolutely no reason why Cilic wouldn’t be challenging for a spot in the finals for the second straight season.
Borna Ćorić +4500
The 22-year-old Coric went 40-20 last year with one title, but he’s been knocked out in the first round in each of his last four Aussie Open appearances. Still, Coric is the kind of player that can literally beat anyone on the planet when he’s firing on all cylinders and he played some inspiring matches for stretches at a time last season. Coric will be a middle-of-the-pack contender on the odds board, but again…on any given day, he can be unbeatable. I like Coric as my ‘forgotten’ longshot pick here!
