Malek Jaziri vs. Richard Gasquet
Malek Jaziri took out one of my all-time favorite players by beating the head-bashing Mikhail Youzhny 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 in his first-round match by winning 71 percent of his first serve points and just 48 percent of his second serves. Jaziri served up five aces to counter his five double faults while breaking Youzhny seven times in the match and getting broken five times.
Richard Gasquet beat the hell out of Andreas Seppi 6-0, 6-2, 6-2 in a dominant first round performance by winning a whopping 84 percent of his first serves and 55 percent of his second serves while winning eight straight games at one point. Gasquet broke Seppi eight times in the match and served up seven aces on Suzanne-Lenglen Court in his opener at Roland Garros.
Seppi and Gasquet have met seven times in their careers and Gasquet is the proud owner of a convincing 6-1 record against the Italian. When they last met, back at the Rome Masters in 2016, Gasquet recorded a 6-3, 6-4 win over Seppi. Gasquet has also won five straight in their head-to-head meetings and three of four on clay. Gasquet gets it done again – in straight sets!
Pick: Richard Gasquet in Straight Sets

Petra Kvitova vs. Anett Kontaveit
Petra Kvitova had her hands full in the first round but managed to get past world number 87 Veronica Cepede Royg 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 in an unexpected thriller. The Czech, the superstar who suffered career-threatening injuries on her playing left hand after being attacked in her home by a knife-wielding intruder in December 2016, arrived in Paris riding an impressive 11-match winning streak.
Kvitova then smacked Lara Arruabarrena around 6-0 6-4 in the second round while winning a whopping 74 percent of her first serve points and 65 percent of her second serve points while breaking Arruabarrena five times in the match.
Anett Kontaveit took out Madison Brengle 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 in her first round match before getting past Alexandra Dulgheru 7-5, 6-2 in the second round by winning a modest 60 percent of her first serve points and 65 percent of her second serve points. Kontaveit overcame four double faults by breaking her opponent five times in the second round.
Petra Kvitova is 2-0 in her career against Anett Kontaveit including her recent 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-3 win on clay at the Madrid Masters in the Round of 16. Kvitova’s other win over Kontaveit was also a tough three-setter, so I don’t expect the World No. 8 to have an easy time, although I guess you should know that Kvitova is my pick to win it all at Roland Garros this year.
Pick: Petra Kvitova in Three Sets
Mihaela Buzarnescu vs. Elina Svitolina
Mihaela Buzarnescu got past Vania King 6-3, 6-3 in her opening round match on Monday and then dispatched Rebecca Peterson in the second round by winning 69 percent of her first serve points and 70 percent of her second serve points. Buzarnescu broke her opponent six times in the match while getting broken just once.
Elina Svitolina dispatched Ajla Tomljanović 7-5, 6-3 in her first round match and then smacked Viktória Kužmová around in the second round, 6-3, 6-4 by getting 71 percent of her first serves in and winning 70 percent of her those points while also winning 58 percent of her second serve points.
These two have never played one another, but for this matchup, Svitolina, the current World No. 4 is the pick to win and advance although Mihaela Buzarnescu has looked outstanding in her first two matches. Svitolina is the odds-on-favorite to win the French Open after she recently won the clay court title in Rome for the second straight year.
Pick: Elina Svitolina in Straight Sets
