Sloane Stephens vs. Caroline Garcia 2018 Rome Masters Tennis Prediction
Sloane Stephens is coming off a 6-0, 5-7, 6-4 win over Kaia Kanepi the last time out while Caroline Garcia smacked Timea Babos around 6-3, 6-4in straight sets in her last match. Stephens won just 57 percent of her first serve points and 55 percent of her second serve points while Garcia won a more favorable 72 percent of her first serve points and 67 percent of her second serve points. Stephens was broken five times in her victory, but Garcia was broken four times. So, what’s a tennis bettor to think?
Well, in two career head-to-head matches, the pair have split, with Garcia winning on a hard court in 2-14 and Stephens exacting some revenge on grass that same year. However, I predicted Stephens’ ouster at Madrid the last time out and I’m predicting another exit for her right now, seeing as how Caroline Garcia is the much better clay court player. Don’t over-think it, Garcia will win in three sets.
Pick: Caroline Garcia 6-3, 6-4
Madison Keys vs. Simona Halep 2018 Rome Masters Tennis Prediction
Simona Halep beat the blossoming Naomi Osaka 6-1, 6-0 in her last match and is going to smack Madison Keys around although Keys got past Donna Vekic 7-6 (2), 7-6 (0). Halep won 66 percent of her first serve points, 61 percent of her second serve points and a blistering 69 percent of her return points the last time out while Keys won 67 percent of her first serve points and 59 percent of her second serve points.
After losing their first head-to-head meetings way back in 2014, Halep has won five straight over Keys, who just isn’t very mentally tough and lacks a comprehensive playing style if you ask me despite her immense serve and forehand. Halep will win this match against the weak-minded American to improve to 6-0 in her last six meetings against the underachieving American.
Pick: Simona Halep 6-4, 6-3
Albert Ramos-Vinolas vs. Novak Djokovic 2018 Rome Masters Prediction
Albert Ramos-Vinolas took out American John Isner 6-7 (5), 7-6 (2), 7-6 (5) in a flat-out thriller in the Round of 32 while Novak Djokovic got past Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-4, 6-2 as he continues to try and work his way back to the top of the sport he once dominated a few short years ago.
Ramos-Vinolas won an insane 75 percent of his first serve points and 68 percent of his second serve points to get past Isner while Djokovic won an insane 81 percent of his first serve points and 58 percent of his second serve points to advance to this match.
While Ramos-Vinolas managed to survive three tiebreaks against the big-serving Isner, I don’t see him getting past Djokovic who owns a 4-0 career mark against the Spaniard, including a 2-0 mark on clay courts. The last time these two met, Djokovic laid a 7-6 (5), 6-1, 6-3 spanking on Vinolas and I’m thinking he’s good for another win this time, although it’s going to take three sets to get it done.
Pick: Novak Djokovic 6-4, 5-7, 6-3
