With the start of the 2018 US Open here, now is the perfect time to examine the favorites, top contenders – and pretenders – on the men’s ATP portion of the fourth and final major of the year.

Can reigning champ Rafael Nadal repeat his shocking success from a year ago? Will the legendary Roger Federer add to his career-high haul or will now, reinvigorated reigning champion Novak Djokovic pull off another grand slam stunner after recently looking unconfident and unsure of himself earlier this year.

If you’ve got questions about the men’s ATP portion of the 2018 U.S. Open, then I’ve got answers.

The Men’s Favorites

The 2018 US Open odds features three of the game’s former Big Four as the top three picks to win it all. 2018 Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic is the favorite at +225 with 2017 champ Rafael Nadal, next up at +275. Five-time US Open champion Roger Federer is a value-packed +500. Nadal opens up against fellow Spaniard David Ferrer in the opening round while Djokovic goes up against Marton Fucsovics, and Federer battles Japan’s, Yoshihito Nishioka.

The Contenders

Alexander Zverev

All I can say about the poised 21-year-old Zverev is that he has all sorts of grand slam potential. The World No. 4 is 43-13 on the year with three titles and he recently joined forces with the legendary Ivan Lendl in order to ramp his game up to another level.

“The reason I’m with him is to compete and win the biggest tournaments in the world,” Zverev said. “That’s the only reason he would join, as well. It’s great having him here. Hopefully, it will show in the results.”

US Open

Juan Martin Del Potro

Maybe everyone forgot that Del Po was well on his way to becoming what looked like a multi-grand slam winner after beating Federer in the 2009 U.S. Open Finals. The powerful Argentine beat Rafael Nadal in the semis that same year and he won the 2018 BNP Paribas Open to claim first Masters 1000 title of his career earlier this year. He’s not getting a llot of mention, but he’’s going to be difficult to dispatch!

US Open

Marin Cilic

Cilic has got all the game in the world to beat anyone on any given day. Sure, he’s not the most emotionally rock-solid guy there is on the world, but he’s already won one U.S. Open and he did so by upsetting Roger Federer in the 2015 finals. No one is really talking about Cilic and that’s why I love his value!

US Open

Stanislas Wawrinka

Wawrinka is looking better and better following two knee surgeries. First, he stunned Grigor Dimitrov in the first round at Wimbledon and since then, he’s given both, Nadal and Federer a very, very tough way to go before falling in Toronto and Cincinnati respectively.

US Open

Pretenders

Nick Kyrgios

Like the ‘Tin Man’ from the Wizard of Oz, Nick Kyrgios needs a brain!

US Open

Grigor Dimitrov

Well damn, like the ‘Cowardly Lion’ Grigor Dimitrov needs a damn heart!

US Open

Milos Raonic

I mean, really, if I want to keep with my Wizard of Oz theme, I could just say that Raonic needs some courage since he’s got none and is letting all of his talents go to waste.

US Open

Andy Murray

Ok, for Murray I’m off of the ‘Wizard thing’  and I’m just going to say his best bet of winning anything of significance will be in 2019. He looks like Novak Djokovic did a year ago when his game wasn’t as good and his confidence could best be described as ‘shaky’.

US Open

Dominic Thiem

I like Thiem, but his best surface is clear clay. I’m wondering if Thiem is always going to be a bridesmaid and never the actual bride.
