With a mind-boggling eight different women claiming the last eight grand slam titles over the past two seasons, it would appear that the field to win the women’s WTA portion of the 2019 Australian Open is quite literally, wide open.

However, one name stands above all others when it comes to being the prohibitive favorite and it’s none other than the legendary Serena Williams. The 37-year-old American is looking to get back to the top of the sport after returning from pregnancy last year with mixed results.

Let’s find out if Williams or one of the other WTA Tour stars is the best pick to win this year’s first slam event.

Serena Williams +375

I’m just going to say that I have absolutely no doubt that the world No. 16 and 23-time Grand Slam champion is going to equal Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24 majors wins in 2019. With that said, I think Serena Williams will likely have an equal chance at all four majors. Williams managed to reach the finals of both Wimbledon and the US Open last year before losing to Angelique Kerber and Naomi Osaka, respectively, but I’m thinking her close calls and the polarizing debacle in New York are going to give her more than enough motivation to get it done here. Besides, Williams is offering some absolutely astounding value as a +400 pick.

Angelique Kerber +800

Angelique Kerber reached the semifinals at the Aussie Open a year ago and the quarters of the French Open before defeating Serena in the Wimbledon final, 6-3, 6-3. I see no reason why Kerber won’t challenge to win the 2019 Australian Open, particularly after claiming her first career slam title here back in 2016.

Elina Svitolina +1200

The 24-year-old Ukraine has a big game and has been pegged as a definite slam winner at some point in the near future. We are thinking the future could be here!

Karolína Plíšková +1300

I’m thinking the 26-year-old Czech Republic star is long overdue to win a grand slam title. I mean, there just aren’t many players on tour that can serve as fast as Serena Williams.

Jelena Ostapenko +5000

I love the 21-year-old Latvian superstar and 2017 French Open winner. Ostapenko has reached the third round here in each of the last two years. Ostapenkio plays a fearless style and she’s got more than enough power – and gumption – to claim the hardware in the 2019 Aussie Open.
