UFC 232: Cris Cyborg vs Amanda Nunes, Bout Preview
We all love our fair share of drama when it comes to UFC events, although we are usually used to seeing said drama take place inside the Octagon. Over the last couple of years, much of the big news events have taken place outside the Octagon. You had Conor MacGregor and friends going after a bus carrying UFC fighters, plus you had Light Heavyweight champ Jon Jones once again being stripped of his title after another failed drug test.
The UFC had hoped to get back on track with the final event of 2018, but UFC 232 already has a black eye after being forced to move from Las Vegas to Los Angeles on a week’s notice. The problem here was that trace amounts of the steroid found in Jones’ system before his last suspension were found in his most recent test. While that was deemed normal, having the fight sanctioned in Nevada became impossible, hence the change of venue.
The show will go on, though, and before the main event, we will have the co-headliner featuring Cris Cyborg and Amanda Nunes.
What: UFC 232: Cris Cyborg vs Amanda Nunes
Where: The Forum in Inglewood, California
Where: Saturday, December 29, 2018, 10:00 PM ET
Why bet on Cris Cyborg?
Since the demise of Ronda Rousey, Cris Cyborg has become the poster child for the women’s sport in the UFC, and for very good reason. You need to go all the way back to 2005 to find the last time that she lost a bout, with that one actually being her debut under the UFC banner. Since then, she has become an unstoppable force, winning 17 of her 20 fights by KO, with Holly Holm being the only fighter able to go the distance during that run.
Cyborg has totally dominated the Featherweight Division, but she will now be facing a fighter moving into this weight class as the champion of the Bantamweights. Cyborg has actually been training with Valentina Shevchenko, who has faced Nunes recently, ahead of this one, so she should be well prepared for this bout.
Why bet on Amanda Nunes?
It would appear that Amanda Nunes is going to take a break from the Bantamweight Division to really test herself against a brilliant opponent. If Nunes can come away with the win here, which is certainly no easy take, she will become the first woman to hold a pair of belts at different weight classes in the UFC.
Nunes comes into this fight with a 16-4 record and a very good pedigree against the best fighters that the UFC has to offer, but you do have to wonder about that change in weight. She is going to need to be very patient against a fighter who is more than happy to sit back and wait for her opponent to make a mistake.
Expert Pick and Prediction
Cyborg comes into this one as the clear favorite, and I have to agree with the bookies in making her that. No-one has really come close to beating her as a featherweight and as good as Nunes is, Cyborg is just that bit better. I am on Cris Cyborg to win by KO.
