What: Jermell Charlo (31-0) Vs. Tony Harrison (27-2) | Charlo’s WBC interim middleweight title
When: Saturday, December 22, 2018, 8:00 PM ET
Where: Barclays Center, Brooklyn, New York
Jermell Charlo (31-0, 15 KOs)
Jermell Charlo is 28-years-old and stands 5’11” with a 73-inch reach and fights out of an orthodox stance. Charlo will be making his fourth title defense of the WBC light middleweight title he won in May of 2016. Charlo comes into this bout off a majority decision win over Austin Trout in June.
“(Harrison) doesn’t get acknowledgment for losing from me. I’m not going to be honoring a guy that didn’t do what he had to do to beat a guy (Hurd) that I know I could beat. Tony Harrison is a guy that’s going to get in there and try to dethrone me and take my title. I’m excited about that. I’m excited to get in and be able to beat somebody without getting in trouble.
“I can’t predict what he’s gonna do. He doesn’t even know what he’s gonna do. If he gets in there and he wants to box, he’s gonna have a long night. If he wants to fight, I fight very strong and hard. I like to knock people out. I like to get the fight over with.”
Tony Harrison (27-2, 21 KOs)
Tony Harrison is 31-years-old and hails from Detroit. He stands 6’1” with a 76.5-inch reach and fights out of an orthodox stance. Harrison has recorded 21 KOs in his career and comes into this title bout off a split decision win over Ishe Smith in May that extended his current winning streak to three fights. Harrison pounded Smith with a series of vicious right hands to his opponent’s swollen left eye.
“I’ve learned to train at a rate where I peak right at fight time and not overdo it. I’m eating better. I’m not getting any younger, so the [stuff] that I was getting away with when I was younger is out the window. I’m just taking calculated steps to do everything right and to make sure that, health-wise, I’m at 100 percent,” said Harrison,
Expert Pick and Prediction
While Tony Harrison is certainly no slouch, he’s also just a cut below the level of fighter that Jermell Charlo is. With four TKOs in his last six fights, Harrison clearly has plenty of punching power and that alone makes him a dangerous opponent. However, Jermell Charlo is the young, faster and far more technically sound fighter in this pairing and one that I expect to avoid Harrison’s power punches while countering with his own. Jermell Charlo is a big favorite in this bout and the reason is that he’s just a bit better than Tony Harrison – at everything. With Harrison suffering both if his career losses via ninth round TKOs, I say Jermell Charlo wins this one via ninth round TKO!
Predicted Result: Jermell Charlo Via Ninth Round TKO
