Alvarez will lay it all on the line when he makes the jump up in weight class to take on WBA “regular” super middleweight champion Rocky Fielding in a 12-round affair that will go down live from Madison Square Garden on Saturday night
What: World Championship Boxing: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez Vs Rocky Fielding
Where: Madison Square Garden, New York, NY
When: Saturday, December 15, 2018, 9:00 PM ET (Main Card)
TV: Sky Sports
Canelo Alvarez (50-1-2, 34 KOs)
The Mexican-born Canelo Alvarez is 28-years-old and stands 5’9” with a 70.5-inch reach. The reigning middleweight champion comes into this affair off a divisive majority decision win over Gennady Golovkin in September that came on the heels of their equally polarizing draw outcome one year earlier. Canelo is looking to become a three-division world champion to join a short list of other great Mexican fights to achieve the feat.
“Winning by a KO is always impressive,” Alvarez said.”I am preparing to make the best of it in this fight by any way, by any means necessary. I’m going to give everything in the ring, and I’m always going to look for the KO as I do in my fights. It’s very important to be on that list of about 10 Mexicans to become three-division world champions, to enter history. That’s why I’m here taking on this important fight, and it’s important that we win this title.”
Rocky Fielding (27-1, 15 KOs)
Englishman Rocky Fielding is 31-years-old and stands 6’1” with a 75-inch reach. Fielding has won six straight fights and comes into this affair off a stunning fifth-round TKO win over Tyrone Zeuge in Germany in July that gave him the WBA “regular” super middleweight title at 168 pounds.
“It’s not a secret that I’m a better fighter and that I’m more experienced,” he said. “I’m feeling great,” Rocky said. “I’m enjoying the moment, I’m looking forward to Saturday night.”
Expert Pick and Prediction
Let me get started with my prediction on this huge fight with a quote by Hall of Fame fighter and current promoter Oscar De la Hoya.
“The fact he is moving up in weight is dangerous,” said De la Hoya. “Fielding is naturally big.”
“Canelo has to be sharp, focused and in shape, because Rocky is coming in with everything and has nothing to lose. I am a little worried about this fight, but I think it will be great.”
For me, I believe that Rocky Fielding has a great chance to record a massive upset in this bout. While he’s a bit older than Canelo Alvarez, he’s also the bigger, stronger fighter in this affair. While Fielding definitely doesn’t have the experience that Alvarez does, he also doesn’t have the baggage of being the favorite that is expected to win this affair.
While I don’t believe that Canelo Alvarez has the best set of technical boxing skills and I also believe he lost to Triple G – twice – I’ve got to believe that he’s going to find a way to get the win over Rocky Fielding in this matchup.
Alvarez just signed an insane, five-year, $278 million deal with DAZN and I don’t believe he’s going to start off the first of it with a damaging loss.
I’m going to back Alvarez for the win as a -600 pick, but I’m going to admit that I believe an upset could very well happen in this match. Stiil, I think the smart money is on Alvarez to get the win, even though I say it comes by way of split decision as Rocky Fielding gives Canelo a surprisingly difficult fight as a value-packed +900 pick in an affair whose outcome will likely be as polarizing as his last two bouts.
Predicted Result: Canelo Alvarez Via Split Decision
